Stepping away from uniform: NUP urges supporters to ditch military-like attire

Stepping away from uniform NUP urges supporters to ditch military-like attire

In a bid to preserve harmony and steer clear of unnecessary clashes with law enforcement, the National Unity Platform ( NUP ) has issued a timely advisory to its faithful followers. The party has taken a proactive stance, urging its supporters to refrain from donning clothing that bears any resemblance to military or police uniforms.

The catalyst for this directive came after a recent rendezvous between NUP leaders and the police. During the meeting, law enforcement officials raised concerns and sounded a stern warning, stating that individuals spotted in such attire would face arrest.

In recent weeks, the police have been on a mission to seek out and detain NUP members who sport clothing that authorities argue closely mimics the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) uniforms. This crackdown aims to tackle any potential misuse or misrepresentation of military attire by civilians.

Joel Ssenyonyi, the eloquent spokesperson of NUP, confirmed that the party wasted no time in cautioning its members against wearing such clothing. The primary objective behind this decision is to prevent unnecessary confrontations with law enforcement while ensuring the safety of party supporters.

“We have made it abundantly clear to our members that it is of utmost importance to avoid wearing apparel that resembles army or police uniforms,” asserted Ssenyonyi. He further emphasized that this measure is in place to ensure that supporters do not find themselves entangled in conflicts with the authorities.

Undeniably, the police have steadfastly reiterated their position, leaving no room for ambiguity. They have unequivocally stated that any individual discovered wearing attire bearing resemblance to that of the UPDF will not only be subject to arrest but may also face prosecution.

This policy forms part of a broader endeavor to maintain order and safeguard the integrity of official military and police uniforms. NUP leaders passionately implore their ardent supporters to honor and abide by this directive, while continuing to express their political views in a lawful and respectful manner.

The party remains unwavering in its commitment to peaceful and non-confrontational political engagement, affirming that true progress is fueled by dialogue and understanding rather than sartorial mimicry.
