Tems Vows Never to Return to Uganda: A Story of Betrayal and Trauma
Nigerian singer Tems, also known as Temilade Openiyi, has made a public declaration that she will never set foot in Uganda again. This decision comes as a result of a traumatic experience she faced during her career, which still lingers in her memory five years later.
In December 2020, Tems and fellow artist Omah Lay were arrested in Uganda for performing at a concert that violated COVID-19 lockdown regulations. Despite being invited guests with valid permits, they found themselves detained due to the irresponsible actions of local event organizers.
The incident involving Tems and Omah Lay shed light on Uganda’s treatment of African talent, showcasing a double standard and lack of respect towards international artists. The heavy-handed approach taken by the government left a stain on the country’s reputation.
Tems’ decision to never return to Uganda is a reflection of the trauma she endured during her detainment. As an artist focused on healing and elevation, the experience of being caged due to others’ negligence has left an indelible mark on her.
For Uganda to mend its relationship with Tems and other artists, genuine accountability is necessary.
This includes holding accountable those responsible for the misconduct, reforming enforcement practices, and showing respect to visiting talents. Only then can the wounds be healed, and the possibility of reconciliation be realized.
