Court prolongs detention of Central Division officials in ongoing Shs450m land scam investigations

Posted on

The Nakawa Chief magistrate court has extended the remand of Kampala Central’s deputy mayor over escalating fraud charges involving hundreds of millions of shillings.

Ms Hanipha Mpungu was first arrested last month for allegedly conniving with others to defraud a businessman  identified as Tony Grace Mulinde  of 450 million Ugandan shillings through a falsified land deal.

Prosecution had requested for more time to investigate additional leads as the case has expanded in scope. Several new witnesses are cited.

It is alleged the public official abused her office by knowingly misrepresenting land titles and utilizing forged documents to swindle the money from the complainant.

Ms Hanipha Mpungu will continue staying at the Kigo Prison as further police inquiries are underway, including analysis of exhibit documents allegedly used in committing the complex act of deception.

Frustration is mounting among residents about lack of service delivery and integrity in local leadership as this latest incident spotlights corruption at city halls.

The embattled deputy mayor maintains innocence and will seek bail again at the next court hearing date while hoping for a fair determination of the case.
